School holiday fun with “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”

Whether we are at home or travelling, one of our favourite things to do with the boys is to go to the movies.   Fortunately it’s a bit easier to do now that they are a little older and their attention span is much better.  These days they’re happy to sit in their seats instead of climbing up and down the steps and under the seats – it’s actually enjoyable to take them AND I can eat my choctop before it melts! 😉

I especially love a good flick that makes them laugh and Twentieth Century Fox Film’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip was filled with jokes and light-hearted humour.  It could be our quirky sense of humour; but the boys laughed so much and so loudly that it almost got a little awkward…yep we’re THAT family! The laughs were followed with loud proclamations of  ‘Oh he’s so funny’ or ‘That blue chipmunk…he’s my chipmunk!’…queue more hysterical laughing. I read a few reviews from people who said that they didn’t find it funny at all … i’m not sure if any children were present in their screenings but from what I experienced in our family screening of the movie it wasn’t just us having a good time.  I brought my mum along for good measure and even she had a few laughs.

It’s worth mentioning also that the music in the film was fantastic. Our boys love singing and dancing and the soundtrack had us (and many others) moving in our seats – some children were even up and out of their seats dancing at the end of the flick.  Our favourite scene was a rendition of  Mark Ronsons Up Town Funk ft. Bruno Mars performed in New Orleans’ French Quarter – amazing! RedFoo also appears and so they loved that #crazyhairdontcare!

The plot revolves around Alvin, Simon and Theodore going on a roadtrip (read: roadchip) to stop Dave from proposing to his new girlfriend in beautiful Miami.  Their partner in crime is their seemingly terrible and menacing future step brother.   I won’t ruin the ending for you but basically the chipmunks have 3 days to get to Miami and stop the proposal. They hit a bunch of transportation problems which all starts with being added to the ‘No Fly List’.  My boys particularly loved seeing the chaos that was caused by a series of unfortunate mishaps on their plane flight.   This was just one of the many highlights for us, including an excellent pre-screening program where we got to meet the Chipmunks, colour-in and score some awesome chipmunks face masks and caps! Note the little chipmunks ears on the caps – this was super cute and a nice touch! 🙂 IMG_1558
