#GoLikeALocal With Tigerair

Not every family can go to Disney and these days they don’t have to. Many of the world’s best holiday experiences can be had in Australia and airlines like Tigerair are making it easy to vacation locally with kids. Short flights at affordable prices to popular local destinations are a fast track to that holiday feeling. The only questions are where to go and when…

“Where should I take the family on holiday?” is one of the most common questions that I get asked. If they are keen to stay in Australia, I always reply ‘Queensland!’ because there is so much to see and do in our home State.

There are family-friendly gems to be found all over the Sunshine State, but we particularly enjoy Cairns, the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Knowing where to go once you get there is usually the second question I’m asked so I’ve put together a few of our #golikealocal faves.

CAIRNS: Visit Cairns for a few days and you’ll wish that you’d stayed for at least a week. Aside from getting out on the reef for snorkelling and sea life, a day trip to Kuranda by rail, followed by a return journey on the Sky Rail (Tip: Click to watch the video!) is an absolute must. Don’t be put off by the time that it takes to get there, the journey is just as much fun as the destination! When you get to Kuranda make sure you leave time to explore the local shops, markets and food outlets… and be sure to check out the Butterfly Sanctuary. The guided tour is worth the extra money – the secret life of butterflies is actually enthralling we promise! Back in downtown Cairns, don’t miss the new Aquarium (it’s world-class) and dining at the restaurant next door – a giant fish tank will keep the kids entertained. A trip to the Muddy’s playground (bring the kids swimmers) should also be on your list.

GOLD COAST: Ok, so everyone knows that the GC is the theme park and attractions capital of Australia thanks to SeaWorld, Movie World, Dreamworld/White Water World, Wet n Wild, Paradise Country and Top Golf just to name a few of our regular stomping grounds. It’s also home to safe, beautiful beaches where you can literally spend a good part of every day. But there is life beyond the parks! Take a trip to Tamborine Mountain. Here kids will love the change of pace by exploring glow worm caves and or riding the treetops at Thunderbird Park. Another idea is to drive South just over the Queensland/New South Wales border and go on a farm tour at Tropical Fruit World – don’t miss making your own ice cream while you’re here and picking up a few fresh fruit and vegetable snacks for the way home.

BRISBANE: Firstly, if you haven’t been to Brisbane you need to book STAT! Yes, you could say that we’re biased because we actually live here but it truly is a beautiful city. Take the City Cat down the Brisbane River to Southbank and have a splash day in our lagoon and free water park. The cityscape will be your backdrop, while you have some amazing eats (try Fish Lane and anything on Grey Street) and don’t miss taking the kids to the Gallery of Modern Art. It’s extremely kid-friendly. A day trip from Brisbane to Tangalooma Island Resort is also big on our “hidden gems” list. A 75-minute ferry ride will have you snorkelling the famous wrecks, feeding dolphins and getting your toboggan-on down some of the world’s steepest sand dunes! It’s fun, adventurous and absolute paradise rolled into one.
